鸡血石(orientaljasper)，是辰砂条带的地开石，因鲜红色似鸡血的辰砂（朱砂）而得名。鸡血石含有辰砂（朱砂）、石英、玉髓35%-45%。磁铁矿、赤铁矿6%-12%。辰砂约5%-8%。

鸡血石同寿山石、青田石、巴林石并列，享有中国“四大国石”的美称。主要用作为印章或是工艺雕刻品材料。中国最早在浙江昌化发现玉岩山鸡血石。后来又发现了内蒙古赤峰市巴林右旗的巴林鸡血石。20世纪90年代又在贵州、陕西、甘肃、四川、湖南、云南’、新疆等地发现了鸡血石。

田黄鸡血石：是一种具有黄色冻地的鸡血石。它质地乳黄，微透明为主，色泽有深有浅，有暗有亮，有净有瑕。深暗者，如熟栗、土黄；浅亮者如桂花黄、鸡油黄；净者极富玉质感，入手心荡；瑕者多色伴生或渗有杂质，大多次于明净者。在黄冻地上配以鲜浓的“鸡血”，就像蜂蜜中渗透红彩，艳丽醒目。田黄冻鸡血石也是鸡血石中的上品。

鸡血石为朱砂（硫化汞）渗透到高岭石中，地开石之中而缓慢形成，这样两者交融，共生一体的天然宝石，在国内外是极为罕见的一种。也有的鸡血石含有‘橄榄石’辉石凝结。

鸡血的成份是硫化汞，石质则为地开石或高岭石，硬度为2—3度。石中时常带有水银斑及少量的石英颗粒突起于石表面。鸡血中除主要成份为硫化汞外，还含有少量的致色元素铁、钛，它们是深色染剂，它的含量多少是鸡血呈现不同红色的主要原因，含量多则血色呈暗红色。另外，鸡血石也含有不同的感光元素硒、碲，这也是鸡血在光照和热烤下褪色或变色（呈现暗红）的主要原因。

鸡血石开采于明初，当时鸡血石露出岩石表层，古人根据热胀冷缩的原理开采，在露出岩石表面的鸡血石上烧柴，岩石全部烧热后，用冰冷的溪水浇泼，使石头分裂，再用铁铲很容易即把鸡血石采下。这样的采法少有裂纹，但鸡血石在没有开采出前很可能多已变黑或变暗，而采出量也非常小。这种采法一直延续到清末民初，基于表层露头的鸡血石都已采竭，改用炸药爆眼，再用手掘或机掘深挖。

鸡血石被称之为世间最贵的石头，对于保养是需要非常注意的，而鸡血石正确的保养方法有如下：

制成品封蜡抛光后，用锦盒密封保存在阴凉处；如长期收藏，也可只封蜡不抛光，让表面留一层薄蜡，这样可以使石材的光泽、色泽不变。

鸡血石切忌在阳光下曝晒，或长期置于强光下，并避免长期置于高温环境中。因为鸡血石的汞元素在阳光的曝晒和高温环境中容易走失而引起血色变紫、变暗或变淡。

用油养鸡血石是广泛采用的保养法。方法是在制成品上擦一层白茶油或白蜡油，让石表吸透油质，变得更加晶莹明净，血色更鲜。如擦油后再密封于锦盒中，可包一层普通的保险薄膜，以免油质沾染锦盒绒布。

在室内的摆件、石玩等要经常擦抹。如陈列时间长而沾染了灰尘、污质，可用细软稠布或绒布轻轻擦抹干净，再用细毛刷蘸油刷一层薄油，即可恢复光彩。
